Post Graduation in Disaster Management

Introduction: Disaster Management involves the building up of capabilities to handle different kinds of emergencies. The disaster management course is gaining importance due to the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, blasts in Assam and floods in Bihar. Education in Disaster management is an attempt to understand the implications of disasters, their management and control. The course is also useful for NGO’s social workers, volunteers providing support and rehabilitation measures during disasters, home guard personnel, and primary health centres etc. The International Red Cross and some UN organisations, NGO’s such as OXFAM, CARE, Action Aid International as well as private emergency response services like those of EMRI and tops line also trained professionals for working on humanitarian missions to handle major calamities and emergencies. An IT professional can apply his knowledge in various software designed for disaster management while an engineer can work on building designs for various disasters.

Current Affairs: Four million people die out of emergencies every year, like traffic accidents, cardiac emergencies, pregnancy complications and many more. These could be prevented through such services. Thus such training institutes have been started to provide training to various categories of people and also support the establishment of State Training Institutes in Disaster Management.

Advantages: This course is action oriented, cross cutting in terms of specialisation, and very satisfying in terms of career choice.

Disadvantages: Career in Disaster management is very demanding, no timing of working hours, each challenges are different from the other. One also has to be emotionally very strong in this field.

Remuneration: Pay structures vary from Rs. 5000/ pm to Rs. 15000-Rs. 50000/ for experienced professionals depending on the employer.
