Introduction to Biotechnology:
Biotechnology is the interdisciplinary frontier between biology, engineering, medicine, and plant science. Biotechnology is the use of advances in molecular biology for application in human and animal health, agriculture, environment and specially biochemical manufacturing. Biotechnology is the collection of tools, and is about, problem solving, where experts from different disciplines collaborate to find a solution to an identified problem, such as pest control, nutritional enhancement, an improved drug, a vaccine or any antibody. Biotechnology is not a single subject, but is really an integrated approach using a conglomerate of several disciplines such as botany, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry and chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, plant breeding, pharmacology, medicine, information and computer science and others. A career in Biotechnology is not just a job. It is participation in then development of new products and processes that could improve the quality of human life as much as any other discovery. Biotechnology is the ‘Biological Revolution’
Objectives of the course:
· Ability to understand the interface of Biology and Engineering;
· Ability to design experiments involving live organisms, perform and control such experiments and interpret results obtained;
· Ability to identify, formulate and solve biotechnology related problems in healthcare, agriculture, environment and energy sectors;
· Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biology and engineering in an engineering problem-solving framework;
· Ability to assess new biomaterials and bio-processing techniques for improving efficiency or reducing pollution;
· Ability to use IT tools effectively in biotechnology processes for information processing, storage, transfer, retrieval and display and in the use of virtual reality environment for education and research;
· Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
· Ability to work harmoniously in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
· Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
· Appreciation of the need for and ability to engage in life-long learning;
